Pet Travel to Brazil from Indonesia: MAPA Entry Steps

Brazil is one of the more approachable long-haul destinations for a dog or cat. It does not ask for a rabies antibody blood test, and compliant pets are not normally held in quarantine on arrival. The hard part of a move from Indonesia is not the rule list. It is timing: several Brazilian requirements are counted back from the date the certificate is issued, and the journey itself usually takes more than a day with at least one connection.

This guide is for owners in Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, or elsewhere in Indonesia who are moving a dog or cat to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, or another Brazilian city. It walks through what Brazil checks at the door, what happens on the Indonesian side, and how to put the steps in an order that holds up on travel day.

What Brazil checks when your pet lands

Pets arriving in Brazil are inspected by VIGIAGRO, the international agricultural inspection service of MAPA. The core document is the International Veterinary Certificate (Certificado Veterinário Internacional, or CVI). According to MAPA’s published guidance, it must be issued or endorsed by the official veterinary authority of the country of origin, and since 6 September 2025 it has to follow the model set by Portaria MAPA nº 741/2024. A certificate in an older format, or one signed only by a private clinic, can be refused.

Beyond the certificate itself, owners generally need to show:

  • A valid rabies vaccination. Indonesia is not rabies-free, so this applies to every dog and cat travelling from Indonesia.
  • Evidence of antiparasitic treatment given within the window stated on the certificate, commonly reported as the 15 days before the CVI is issued.
  • A clinical examination by a veterinarian shortly before the certificate is issued.
  • Identification that matches every page of the file. Brazil’s rules focus on identification in the certificate, but in practice a readable microchip is expected by airlines and by the Indonesian export process.

MAPA’s guidance lists a separate import authorisation for some other companion species, such as rabbits and ferrets, but not for dogs and cats. Because the arrival paperwork for your exact flight can still differ, ask us to confirm it before you finalise the file. For a quick overview of the destination side, see our Brazil pet import page.

Rabies vaccination timing from Indonesia

The rabies vaccine is usually the step that decides how early you need to start. The animal must be old enough to be vaccinated (commonly cited as over 90 days), and a waiting period must pass between a first vaccination and arrival in Brazil. Some sources give 21 days and others 30 days. Planning on the longer figure is the safer choice until MAPA confirms the current rule for your case.

If your pet already has an up-to-date rabies booster that has never lapsed, the waiting period is often not an issue. If the record shows a gap, a missing batch number, or a microchip implanted after the vaccine, have your vet in Indonesia review it early. Fixing a vaccination record takes weeks, not days. Brazil does not require a rabies titer test, so you do not need to plan around laboratory turnaround the way you would for the UK or Japan.

The Indonesian export side

Leaving Indonesia is its own process. Barantin handles animal quarantine for exports, and the official endorsement of your pet’s certificate comes through that channel. Your private vet prepares the health examination and records, but the CVI only counts in Brazil once the official authority in Indonesia has issued or endorsed it on the correct model.

This is where most Indonesia to Brazil plans run into trouble. The CVI has a short validity window, often reported as around 10 days for countries outside Mercosur, and the antiparasitic treatment and clinical exam are counted back from the date it is issued. That means the final vet visit, the Barantin appointment, and the flight all have to sit inside the same short period. Our pet export from Indonesia guide explains the departure-side steps in more detail.

When Step What to watch
2 to 3 months before travel Vet review of microchip and rabies history Gaps in the record or a chip placed after the vaccine
At least 30 days before arrival Rabies vaccination, if a new one is needed Use the longer waiting period until MAPA confirms
6 to 8 weeks before travel Airline and routing confirmed in writing Transit country rules and crate size
Within the last 2 weeks Antiparasitic treatment and clinical exam Both must fall inside the window counted from the CVI date
Final days before departure CVI issued or endorsed through Barantin Correct Portaria 741/2024 model, short validity
Arrival VIGIAGRO inspection at the Brazilian airport Original documents in hand luggage

Flights and connections between Indonesia and Brazil

There is no direct flight between Indonesia and Brazil, so every route includes at least one connection, usually through the Middle East or Europe. That connection matters for your pet in two ways. First, the airline has to accept the animal on every leg of that exact itinerary, whether in the cabin, as checked baggage, or as cargo. Second, some transit countries have their own rules for animals changing planes, even when the pet never leaves the airport.

Ask the airline to confirm acceptance in writing for the flight numbers and dates, not just for the route. A longer layover can be easier on the animal than a tight one, because it leaves room for handling if a flight is delayed. Brazil’s international airports that regularly receive pets include Guarulhos in São Paulo and Galeão in Rio de Janeiro; check that your arrival airport has an active VIGIAGRO unit for animal inspection. Our IATA crate guide covers sizing and ventilation for a long journey like this one.

Arrival in Brazil and the first days after

Carry the original CVI and supporting records in a folder in your hand luggage, with scans on your phone as a backup. VIGIAGRO officers check that the animal, its identification, and its papers match. When everything is in order, compliant pets are normally released without quarantine. If something is missing or inconsistent, the pet can be held while the problem is resolved, which is why matching the microchip number across every page matters so much.

Once you are settled, register with a local vet and keep the rabies booster current. Brazil has rabies risk of its own, so continuing vaccination is sensible even though your pet has arrived. If you later plan to travel onwards or return to Asia, the Brazilian export side will be a separate process.

Book the flight only after the airline has confirmed your pet in writing and your vet has checked that the rabies, antiparasitic, and CVI dates fit inside the same window. Frequently asked questions

Does my pet need to go into quarantine in Brazil?

Compliant pets are not normally quarantined on arrival. A pet can be held if the documents are incomplete or do not match the animal, so the file needs to be checked before departure.

Do I need a rabies titer test to move my pet from Indonesia to Brazil?

Brazil does not ask for a rabies antibody test. A valid rabies vaccination with the correct waiting period is still required, because Indonesia is not a rabies-free country.

Can my private vet in Indonesia issue the certificate?

Your vet performs the examination and keeps the records, but the CVI must be issued or endorsed by the official veterinary authority. For exports from Indonesia, that endorsement goes through Barantin.

How early should I start planning?

Two to three months is a sensible baseline if the rabies record is already current. Start earlier if the vaccine needs to be renewed, the microchip needs checking, or you have a fixed move date for work.

Can my cat travel in the cabin to Brazil?

It depends on the airline, the aircraft on each leg, and the size and weight of the cat with its carrier. Cabin acceptance has to be confirmed for every flight on the itinerary, including the connection.
